Freetype2 is indeed somewhere in the X11 SDK but the autoconf that is coming with FOX does not know how to detect it. Works fine without using Xft. https://bugs.debian.org/606070 XFT applies cleanly, because all (most) patches you find on the net are "diff'ed" (I'll come back to this later) against a clean dwm.c.
