I've closed and reopened the browser and rerun the dotproject install. Oops! Thanks for your help.

Note that you may want to make that check optional via a config setting or something, because it IS going to be non-writable on the majority of shared hosts, and in Can I download 1.5.3 from somewhere, or some other version that works? So as a test I changed the group for /var/lib/php/session to www-data and my login for phpMyAdmin started working.
